I lost my good friend this week Joy Brown to her terrible disease that cause her whole family to be in a living hell for the last five years. The whole bunch was our church family as they showed us all how to serve and not complain as they worked harder than any two people that have passed thru our church in the forty years that I have been there. I hope I learned something from them and I think I did. I don’t know why good people like them have to suffer in this life like they have had to. I hope the rest of their lives are filled with JOY!

Dazed And Confused

Here I sit wondering why I am running the air conditioner on the way to work this morning and then seeing all the damage from a spring like storm last night. Why was I pushing a lawnmower last week with sweat pouring off my head like it was mid June. Why did many of our church members including me all catch the same stomach bug. Why was I swimming and in the hot tub in January, and today a beautiful sun filled great Spring type day. I don’t know but I like it………….

My Homes In Alabama

We don’t get to pick where we are born it just happens and you get what you get. I have determined today that Alabama is a good place to live for many reasons. The one that started this thought process is “The Crimson Tide” becoming the National Champions of college football again last night for the 2^nd time in three years. Pretty good. A Congressman in Arizona not knowing but what little he had heard about the South made some degrading remarks about my state last summer and Jack wrote him and told him how wrong and uneducated he was on the matter. He apologized and that was the end of that story.

The music, sports, political, entertainment , education contribution Alabama has made in just my life time is huge. From the music world we have Alabama the country group. Hank Williams Sr. and Jr. Tammy Wynette, Then two winners of American Idol came from Alabama, The Commodores, Lionel Ritchie, Percy Sledge, Tommy Shaw of styx fame and many others. In the entertainment world is Kate Jackon of Charlie’s Angels and Courtney Cox of Friends and George Lindsey (Goober) Pat Buttram of Green Acres as Mr. Haney. George Wallace is one of the most popular politicians good or bad in his day. Richard Shelby is a huge figure in the House of Representatives. Huntsville Alabama has had a hand in the space race for more than forty years, And sports Alabama and Auburn have built college football to a national pastime and huge marketing entity. So today I am proud to be from the Great State Of Alabama.

What A Difference You Made In My Life

Melissa, Kristen Mom, Jack and I decided to go to Ryan’s for lunch today not knowing what surprise awaited me there. Mine and Jack’s favorite coach, Dafford Smith was there and we sit and talked old times and had a great visit. He was one of the most successful coaches in Alabama in the 60′s and 70′s with my team going 13-0 my last year to play for him. Then I look up and there is my librarian from Jr. High, Mrs. Fairbrother, and then I looked up and there was Mr. Tillman our principal at CHS, I always had a lot of respect for the visionary that he was and his respect and kindness to me all my friends that caused no trouble. And then last but certainly not least, Julian Oaks my boss at the airport that taught me many lessons about doing things right for there was no room for error in the airplane maintenance business. He made me get up early and stay out late opening and closing that airport every day. How to polish bathroom floors and how to build an aircraft engine. I got to meet many people in the community and many famous people, learn to fly, learned business, how to make change, charge credit cards, and how to deal with the public. Many things I learned there helped me thru the years of being my own boss. Jack and I both have fond memories of these people and and had a ball seeing them all at one time. Looking back, these people were my sunshine both day and night.

I Shall Not Be Moved

T-minus 6 days and counting till a week long much anticipated break. It’s been a long time since the 4th of July. Sleeping late and then to the couch, to breakfast and back to the couch and then lunch and back to the couch and supper and well you know, to bed. It’s gonna be nice. The year 2011 will be the one that went so fast I have to go back and see what happened. Mostly the tornados that made May almost not happen as everybody was helping somebody with something. Again so many things happen just as they did in 2010 that makes it go by in a hurry too. Skylar starts to work at Belk today, Belks in my day. And ready for the family to get back together and do what we do. A beautiful Saturday morning and ready to get back home and start getting the pillows and blankets and hot chocolate and chile and fritos and house shoes and pajama bottoms ready for next week. Just like a tree that’s planted by the water………………………

California Girls

It usually takes about three minutes to get to church but this past Sunday a little detour to Nashville took us about five hours out of the way. I have never gone on a long trip on a Sunday morning before but to get the flight that was available that is what we did. Kristen decided instead of going to New York with the band she would just go to San Diego to visit Allison who had moved in July to be with her military husband. So off we go in the dark with no traffic and an easy ride and off she went for another of her many trips she has made. We made it back in plenty of time for church and yawned all the way thru the sermon and class but nothing like adventure. Skylar is going to be home tonite and we will have a replacement child. Looking forward to Thursday and family time together. Melissa and I started us a facebook page but after having one a couple of years ago I can see it has just about run it’s course as all of the social medias do. Seems to be fading fast. Storms are a coming and our annual PIE SUPPER is tonite and I always like that. Let the eating begin.
